The state's investor-owned utilities, including AEP, have in place the systems that allow customers to choose an Alternative Electric Supplier (AES), the company that supplies the electricity you use.
Because you live in an area of the state where electricity rates are low - and those rates are frozen through 2004 - it is not likely that you will receive many service offers soon after the market opening. However, we expect that a competitive market will develop in time and you eventually will receive offers from which you can choose. Meanwhile, various parties in the state including AEP, are taking steps to help the market develop.
The Michigan CHOICE Advisory Council - consisting of representatives of the state's electricity consumers, utilities and regulators - has proposed a statewide awareness and education campaign to advise consumers of the Electric Choice program. A mass media effort will begin "when the time is right" as determined by the Advisory Council. Initial activities are expected to focus on an internet web site and establishment of a call center.
Regardless of when the market develops and what choices you make, AEP still will deliver your power reliably and safely over the facilities in place today. Please continue to contact AEP if your service is interrupted.
The pages in the menu to the right contain information that will help you learn about Electric Choice in Michigan and will help you make decisions about energy and related services when the time comes. You also can learn more from the Michigan Public Service Commission.
Finally, we also provide AEP fuel mix and emission information
